James S. Kahane is an internationally recognized conductor known for his energy, precision, and musical leadership. He creates strong connections between musicians and audiences through thoughtful performances.
As a Music Director Candidate for the Regina Symphony Orchestra’s 2026/27 Season, Kahane brings extensive international experience. He also brings a passion for both symphonic and operatic music.
James currently serves as Music Director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestre de Chambre de la Drôme in France.

James S. Kahane has built an international career through expressive performances and strong artistic partnerships. He has conducted leading orchestras across Europe, North America, and beyond.
His engagements include performances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also worked with the Orchestre National de Mulhouse, Jyväskylä Sinfonia, and Pori Sinfonietta.
Critics have praised Kahane for his flexibility, determination, and ability to unite musicians. His debut album with the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra was released by Resonus Classics. The recording received international recognition for its powerful performances and artistic vision.

Kahane brings experience from both the concert hall and opera stage. He has conducted productions by composers including Bizet, Britten, and Kokkonen.
His opera credits include The Tragedy of Carmen, The Rape of Lucretia, and The Last Temptations. He has also led world premieres of new operatic works, including Kon’s Bas Sheve and Tuurna’s Years of Silence.
Additionally, Kahane has worked with the Finnish Chamber Opera and the Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival. He has also assisted conductor Hannu Lintu at major European opera productions, including performances at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Bregenzer Festspiele.
Kahane is passionate about creating new musical experiences. He believes in exploring new ideas and building connections through music.
Since 2016, he has conducted the Far(away) Ensemble. The multidisciplinary group focuses on performing the music of composer Jacopo Aliboni.
Together, they recorded music for the short films Du Temps Perdu and Le Temps Prend Feu. The latter was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2019, Kahane helped re-establish the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra. He later became its Principal Conductor. Through this role, he continues to support creative programming and collaboration.
He has also conducted the Polytech Orchestra. There, he followed a distinguished line of previous conductors, including Jorma Panula and Sakari Oramo.
Kahane began his conducting studies at Finland’s prestigious Sibelius Academy. He was admitted to the Orchestral Conducting class at just 19 years old.
During his studies, he worked with renowned conductors Sakari Oramo, Hannu Lintu, and Atso Almila. He also participated in leading international programs and masterclasses.
These included the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Bernard Haitink’s masterclass at the Lucerne Music Festival, and the Tanglewood Music Festival.
Throughout his career, Kahane has learned from many celebrated conductors. These include Paavo Järvi, Neeme Järvi, David Zinman, Peter Eötvös, and Sir Roger Norrington.
His early career was featured in the documentary film Conductivity. The film followed his studies at the Sibelius Academy and was released in Finnish cinemas in 2020.
